Proven Systems & Magic Pills

Do you believe in magic pills?

What's a magic pill?

The belief that you can buy a pill, go to bed, and wake up rich, or thin, or happy.

When I say pill, what I mean to say is a book or course or mentorship program.

You see, buying a book is easy. Reading a book takes sacrifice. You have to make the time to read the book. If you're anything like me, then it takes you double time to read the book because you also make notes.

Why do I make notes while I reading?

So that I can use what I've read.

I often read a book and want to use 10 or 20 ideas. Then at the end of the book it's easy to think about what you're going to read next... and fail to use any of the great ideas you learned.

I take lots of notes. This doubles or triples the time to read the book. And halves the time it takes to use the ideas. (At least, that's what I tell myself.)

Buying a book is easy. Reading a book takes sacrifice. Using the ideas takes Time & Money & Enthusiasm.

As you can see, the effort and sacrifice becomes greater the closer you are to getting what you want.

As you can see, this is nothing close to a magic pill.

If there's no magic pill, why would you invest your hard earned cash to learn a proven system?

Proven Systems Save You Time & Money & Enthusiasm

Proven systems are the fastest way to progress from clueless to proficient.

If you want to do something, and you've got no idea how to do it. Then a proven system is the way to go.

When I wanted to become a copywriter, I bought a book. A book that I still refer to today (thanks to my notes). It didn't give me everything that I needed to know to write copy that makes the cash register ring. But it gave me a very solid foundation. This book covers understanding your customer better than most high end copywriting workshops.

Understanding who you are writing to. That's where a copywriter earns their money. In the things they do before they have written a single word. Before they have even thought about writing a sales letter or email.

You see once you have walked a mile in your ideal customers' shoes. Then you can write a drop everything message that pulls them into your copy. Then you can write a story that guides them to the sale with excited anticipation.

What was the book?

The Ultimate Sales Letter by Dan Kennedy.

The book also gave me a fantastic process to edit copy.

Let's face it. We all think that what we have produced after a day at a coalface is gold. After a night's sleep, we can often see the faults in what we created.

Having a process to edit your copy helps to shine the light of reality on your work.

Did the book deliver 100x or 1,000x the £7.99 investment?

And that's because of when I read it in my journey. It would still help me today but not in the way that it did at the beginning.

What the book didn't teach me was how to write a sales letter.

I was still amazed that anyone could write a 3,500 sales letter. I couldn't understand how anyone could write that much about a product or service. After all, how many ways can you say I've got a 10 CD set to help you invest in property no money down.

That's why I read more books, took online courses and joined mentorship programs. I wanted to learn the secrets to write a sales letter.

Once I saw that half (or more) of a sales letter is an inspirational personal story... that's when I saw how you could write 3,500 words. That was my Ah-ha moment. That's when I could write something that looked and acted like a sales letter.

Following a proven system gave me the skill to step onto the field. This allowed me to play the game. By the rules of the game.

A proven system didn't make it easy!

In fact, trying to follow a proven system felt like wearing a straightjacket. I was trying to force my ideas into a mould. And what came out was a mess. So, I tried again. I kept working at it until I had something that I was proud of.

It took several weeks to write my first sales letter. But that didn't matter. What mattered was I had crossed the finish line.

Why was it so hard to follow a proven system? And why was it worth it?

To answer that question. I need to use an analogy.

The Mannequin And The Fashion Designer

All clothes designers start with the same mannequin. Those are the rules of the game that they must obey.

From that structure, they must create a collection of clothes. Each item must be different. And each item of clothing must fit within the collection.

They must repeat this process 3 times a year.

Great fashion designers don't succeed because of talent alone. They fuse talent with passion and a 60-hour week for a decade. That's how they master their craft. That's how they become great. That's how they become known.

Are they learning from past masters?

You better believe it.

Are they putting their spin on the work of past masters?

You better believe it.

Are they falling short of the success they imagine?

You better believe it.

And that's what keeps them working at their craft. The challenge of bringing their ideas to life. The challenge of making the picture in their mind real in the world.

What has all this got to do with you?

If you want to grow your business you need a proven process to turn strangers into customers on demand. It's as simple as that.

How do you do that?

You can try and figure it out by yourself. Or you can follow a proven system and get in the game faster.

The proven system is like the mannequin. You have to cut your cloth to make it your own. You have to wrap your story and your offer around a proven system. That's how you can use a simple structure to tell 100 different stories. And each story will feel unique.

You need to wrap your story, your offer, your passion and your experience around a proven system. Then you must...

Test And Measure Your Way To Success

There's only 1 thing that tells you if you have used a proven system well. Results!

If you're writing a sales letter. The only question is, does it make the cash register ring?

If you don't get the results you want. That's when you need to dive into the reports. They will tell you what you must change to make the sales you want.

So, let's say you write a sales letter and make no sales. Is that because the sales letter was terrible?

You won't know until you see how many people viewed the page.

If 10 people viewed the page and you made no sales then you don't know if you need to change or improve your copy.

The only thing you know is that you need to get more people to read your sales letter. That could mean improving your email copy. That could mean putting more people through your funnel.

How will you know the right answer?

The results will tell you!

Results don't lie. Our egos do.

Our egos tell us that we should carve our letter in stone. The results prove our ego right or wrong.

What if the results tell you the sales letter must be re-written?

You go back to the proven system. You look at how you can improve each element. You look at how you can seamlessly stitch one part to another.

You smooth out every bump in the road from the headline to the sale.

Then you step back and ask if it rings true.

Your sales letter is a coffee shop conversation. So when you read it. Does it sound like a conversation? Does each sentence flow into the next? Does each paragraph flow into the next? Most importantly... does it sound like marketing or a conversation?

If you have written something that sounds like marketing. Then you must re-write it. This is a conversation between 2 people that share the same passion.

The proven system you are following is a structure to help you organise your idea. If it makes your copy sound clumsy then you must change it. It is your responsibility.

I re-wrote my first sales letter countless times. My first attempt was terrible. One section did not flow into the next. The story was not two people sharing their passion. It was self-indulgent. The story lurched into the offer. The ideas fell over themselves.

Each time there was a bump in the road. I gave the reader the perfect opportunity to put down the sales letter. I was making the reader work too hard to read it. And I know that the distractions of Facebook and email would win. So... I re-wrote the letter. My second attempt was better. And still not good enough.

I kept working at it until I had something that I was proud of. It didn't matter how long it took. The only thing that mattered was the quality.

Remember, you are stitching a jacket for a mannequin. So... does the jacket look good? Would you want to wear it?

If you don't want to wear the jacket you've just stitched. Start again.

If you are your worst critic, use that to save your ego in the real world. Re-write and re-write and re-write.

You are trying to turn cloth into a beautiful jacket. You'll know when you've done that. Then show it to the world. Real-world feedback will tell you if the market wants your jacket.

Written Reports Are Your Map To Success

I'm not going to lie. Writing reports is not what makes me jump out of bed.

I know that written reports are the map to success. So, I write them on a weekly basis. When I fall off the wagon. There are always expensive consequences.

Written reports help you analyse your results in greater detail. They help you see your next action in the numbers.

Reports are NOT the numbers of what happened. A written report is your opinion of what the numbers mean. That's how you know what to do next.

Written reports take your ego out of the numbers. They take top of the mind thinking out of the numbers. The take real-world feedback and turn it into your next step.

Written reports give you a map to see what worked and didn't work in the past.

If you start to get rose-tinted glasses about how easy it was to make money in the past. Look at the reports. They will show you the truth.

I've set ego based targets. And been heartbroken when I have failed to reach my goals. Then I've read old reports and found that my targets were not achievable.

The reports don't lie. Our egos lie.

Save your ego from the embarrassment of unrealistic goals by setting targets based on previous results.

Reports take discipline to write. That's all. And they are your roadmap to success.

The Short-Cut To Success

Proven systems are the shortcut to success.

Proven systems still need effort and creativity. You've got to wrap your story around the structure to bring it to life. Your ability to give your reader a front row seat to a better life is what determines your success using a proven system.

Don't give up on the system if you find it hard to use at first.

There are no magic pills!

You can't buy a course, go to bed and wake up rich.

You can learn to use a proven system. You can put your passion and enthusiasm into it. You can test it in the real world and then let real-world feedback tell you what to do next.

When you do that. You will succeed faster than you ever could on your own.

That's how I've succeeded. By standing on the shoulders of giants. That's how every successful person I know has succeeded. By learning from the people that have come before them.

So don't quit at the first sign of adversity. The success you desire is inches from your finger tips.

Now It's Your Turn
